Public Transportation in Cagliari
The conference site can be reached from Piazza Yenne (the small pittoresque
square in central Cagliari) in about 10 minutes by climbing the staircase
to enter the castello. Most public transportation buses, however, pass through
Piazza Matteotti (the big square in front of the bus terminal and the train
station), which is connected to Piazza Yenne by a two block stretch of Largo
Felice. Further, there is a small bus 7 connecting Piazza Yenne and the
Castello which gets to within two or three blocks from the conference site.
All bus tickets must be purchased in advance (from a newspaper stand, from
the ticket boot in Piazza Matteotti, or from the bar in Piazza Carlo Alberto
near the Architecture Building) and stamped inside the bus. In emergency
cases the driver will sell tickets (at twice the price), but he is under no
obligation to do so if he is running late or does not have change. There
exist tickets for 12 rides (at a 10 percent discount) and weekly bus passes
(It.: settimanale) for 9.30 euros.
From Piazza Yenne it is 10 minutes by foot. Look for the staircase (It.:
scalette) starting in the corner of the square, next to Hotel Aurora. Climb
the staircase, take a right to reach the Elefant's Tower (It.: Torre
dell'Elefante). On your right there is Viale dell'Università with as
the first building the Rettorato, where the opening ceremony is held (in the
Eighteenth Century Lecture Room [It.: Sala del Settecento] one floor up).
Normally, you pass the gate underneath the Elefant's Tower and go straight
into Via Corte d'Appello. After a few short blocks, you will see the
Architecture Building on your right-hand side.

Alternatively, there is a public transportation minibus No. 7 (It.: pullmannino
N.7) every 15 minutes which leaves from Piazza Yenne (in front of the pharmacy
at the corner of Via Mannu), follows Largo Felice, Via Roma e Via Regina
Margherita (and hence passes by Hotel Regina Margherita), and then enters
the Castello along the Museum Citadel (It.: Cittadella dei Musei), Piazza
dell'Indipendenza (where there is a bus stop), Via Lamarmora, the Elefants'
Tower (It.: Torre dell'Elefante), and the Lions' Gate (It.: Porta dei Leoni),
and then returns to Piazza Yenne along Via Regina Margherita, Via Roma, and
Largo Felice. The bus stop for the conference site is Piazza Carlo Alberto (in
front of the cathedrale in Via Lamarmora) and for the Rettorato the next stop
at the Lions' Gate. The stop for the museums (an archaeological museum [the best
museum of the three], a late Middle Ages plus Renaissance art museum, and a one
room oriental art depot) is Piazza dell'Indipendenza from where one easily
reaches the conference site. At the end of Via Corte d'Appello, at 50 meters
from the conference site, is the museum which houses what has been the Jewish
Ghetto (It.: ghetto degli ebrei) until about 200 years ago.
Public transportation links to/from the hotels:
- Hotel Italia: From the hotel it is a 10 minutes walk to the
conference site. It is 2 blocks from Piazza Yenne.
- Hotel Calamosca: From the hotel, walk 10 minutes to Piazza
San Bartolomeo and take (trolley) bus 5 (or use minibus No. 11 leaving the
square in front of Hotel Calamosca every 30 minutes and change to one of the
buses 5, PQ, or PF once reaching Viale Diaz); leave the bus in Via Roma at the
Rinascente Department Store, and walk along Largo Felice to Piazza Yenne.
To reach the hotel, take bus 5 in Via Roma near the Rinascente Department Store
until the end of the line in Piazza San Bartolomeo and walk 10 minutes
towards the beach (or take minibus No. 11 from Piazza San Bartolomeo, every
30 minutes). On Sunday one can take the (normal) bus 5/11 directly to/from the
square in front of the hotel without having to walk to/from Piazza San
Bartolomeo or to take minibus No. 11.
- Residence Ulivi e Palme: The hotel is situated halfways between two
consecutive stops of bus 1 on Via Castiglione. From the hotel, take bus 1
on the same side of the street as the hotel and leave the bus in Piazza
Yenne. To return to the hotel, take bus 1 in front of Banca di Napoli on the
corner of Largo Felice and Via Mameli, and get off at the second or third
stop on Via Castiglione.
- La Terrazza Sarhotel: From the hotel it is a 10 minutes walk to the
conference site. It is half a block from Piazza Yenne. Since this hotel does
not serve breakfast, it is good to know that there is a bar between the hotel
and Piazza Yenne.
- Hotel Aurora: Climb the staircase outside the hotel entrance. From
there it is a few blocks to the conference site. Since this hotel does not serve
breakfast, there is various bars in and outside Piazza Yenne to have breakfast.
- Hotel Sardegna: Take bus 9 (each 15-20 minutes) across the street
to arrive in Piazza Matteotti. From there it is a 10 minutes walk to the
conference site. Alternatively, walk for 10 minutes to Piazza S.Michele, take
bus 1 in the direction of Downtown Cagliari (each 9 minutes), and get off at
the Banca di Napoli bus stop at the corner of Via Mameli and Largo Felice.
From there it is a 10 minutes walk to the conference site.
Public transportation links to/from the Poetto beach:
- Hotel Italia, Hotel Aurora, La Terrazza Sarhotel: From Piazza
Matteotti take one of the buses PQ and PF (together an every 17 minutes
service) or P, PN or 3/P (express buses running in the summer).
- Residence Ulivi e Palme: From Piazza Giovanni XXIII, which can be
reached by foot or using bus 1 along Via Castiglione, take express bus 3/P.
- Hotel Sardegna: Walk to Piazza S.Michele and take express bus 9/P.
- Hotel Calamosca: Since there is a beach alongside the hotel, going
to Poetto Beach does not make sense. However, to go there, from Piazza San
Bartolomeo one takes trolley bus 5 (on Sunday, bus 5/11 directly from the
square in front of Hotel Calamosca). Once reaching Viale Diaz, one gets off,
crosses the street and takes one of the buses PQ or PF to Poetto. Every 30
minutes one can take minibus No. 11 directly from Hotel Calamosca, get off
once reaching Viale Diaz, cross the street and take one of the buses PQ or
PF to Poetto Beach.
