Public Transportation in Cagliari

The conference site can be reached from Piazza Yenne (the small pittoresque square in central Cagliari) in about 10 minutes by climbing the staircase to enter the castello. Most public transportation buses, however, pass through Piazza Matteotti (the big square in front of the bus terminal and the train station), which is connected to Piazza Yenne by a two block stretch of Largo Felice. Further, there is a small bus 7 connecting Piazza Yenne and the Castello which gets to within two or three blocks from the conference site.

All bus tickets must be purchased in advance (from a newspaper stand, from the ticket boot in Piazza Matteotti, or from the bar in Piazza Carlo Alberto near the Architecture Building) and stamped inside the bus. In emergency cases the driver will sell tickets (at twice the price), but he is under no obligation to do so if he is running late or does not have change. There exist tickets for 12 rides (at a 10 percent discount) and weekly bus passes (It.: settimanale) for 9.30 euros.

From Piazza Yenne it is 10 minutes by foot. Look for the staircase (It.: scalette) starting in the corner of the square, next to Hotel Aurora. Climb the staircase, take a right to reach the Elefant's Tower (It.: Torre dell'Elefante). On your right there is Viale dell'Università with as the first building the Rettorato, where the opening ceremony is held (in the Eighteenth Century Lecture Room [It.: Sala del Settecento] one floor up). Normally, you pass the gate underneath the Elefant's Tower and go straight into Via Corte d'Appello. After a few short blocks, you will see the Architecture Building on your right-hand side.

Alternatively, there is a public transportation minibus No. 7 (It.: pullmannino N.7) every 15 minutes which leaves from Piazza Yenne (in front of the pharmacy at the corner of Via Mannu), follows Largo Felice, Via Roma e Via Regina Margherita (and hence passes by Hotel Regina Margherita), and then enters the Castello along the Museum Citadel (It.: Cittadella dei Musei), Piazza dell'Indipendenza (where there is a bus stop), Via Lamarmora, the Elefants' Tower (It.: Torre dell'Elefante), and the Lions' Gate (It.: Porta dei Leoni), and then returns to Piazza Yenne along Via Regina Margherita, Via Roma, and Largo Felice. The bus stop for the conference site is Piazza Carlo Alberto (in front of the cathedrale in Via Lamarmora) and for the Rettorato the next stop at the Lions' Gate. The stop for the museums (an archaeological museum [the best museum of the three], a late Middle Ages plus Renaissance art museum, and a one room oriental art depot) is Piazza dell'Indipendenza from where one easily reaches the conference site. At the end of Via Corte d'Appello, at 50 meters from the conference site, is the museum which houses what has been the Jewish Ghetto (It.: ghetto degli ebrei) until about 200 years ago.
